Initial Response to the New Zealand Cervical Cancer Audit 2004
This report provides the initial response of National Screening Unit (NSU) to the findings and recommendations of the New Zealand Cervical Cancer Audit 2004.

Introduction
The Gisborne Inquiry (The Ministerial Inquiry into the Under-reporting of Cervical Smear Abnormalities in the Gisborne region) recommended an audit of cervical screening when it reported in 2001. The audit was to determine whether there were systemic problems with the National Cervical Screening Programme, and to recommend improvements to reduce the rates of women developing and dying from cervical cancer.

Epidemiologists from University of Auckland’s school of population health designed and carried out the Audit, with an independent team in the Ministry of Health providing operational assistance.

The Auditors reviewed the screening histories of 371 women diagnosed with cervical cancer between 2000 and 2002 and re-reading their smears in an Australian laboratory. Details of the aims, objectives and methodology are included on this website.

The Audit team has now reported to the Director-General of Health.
