Clinical Training Agency
in New Zealand

Workforce development in the health and disability sector is undergoing a sea-change. Following significant investment by the sector in information gathering, new strategic directions are emerging from leaders within the sector.

The Clinical Training Agency (CTA) is an integral part of the movement towards new directions to address the workforce challenges faced by the sector, both now and in the future.

There is an increase in the CTA budget from $121,500,000 in 2008/09 to $125,000,000 in 2009/10 largely due to budget increases for General Practice, Postgraduate Midwifery and Nursing Entry to Practice (NETP) Expansion.

In September 2009 the Minister of Health established the Clinical Training Agency Board (CTAB) to provide advice to oversee the rationalisation of workforce planning, training, education and purchasing within the health sector. It is an interim measure to drive immediate change while advice is developed on the longer-term placement of a health sector clinical training agency.

Whilst the CTA Board has the same name as the Clinical Training Agency, its work programme will be larger than the current mandate and work programme of the Clinical Training Agency.
