Elective Services

Elective Services are hospital services for patients who do not need immediate hospital treatment.

The Elective Services website (www.electiveservices.govt.nz) contains information about how well the 21 District Hospital Boards are progressing against government targets in the area of managing patients’ access to services. It also provides guidelines for primary care practitioners to assist them in managing patients and referring them to hospitals.

In 2008 the Minstry of Health commissioned Synergia Limited to review the Elective Services Orthopaedic Major Joint and Ophthalmology Cataract Initiatives. The findings are included in this report.

Elective services are hospital services for people who do not need immediate medical treatment. If you are very ill and require emergency treatment you will be treated with minimal delay.

This leaflet explains how your care will be managed should you need elective services at a public hospital.

8 May 2007: Comparison of DHB Elective Activity by Specialty using Standardised Discharge Ratios
The reports set out intervention rates for a selected group of procedures including general surgery, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, paediatric surgery, gynaecology, cardiology, plastics, and ear, nose and throat procedures, compared with the national average. Using data supplied by boards the working parties calculated standardised discharge ratios (SDR) for each specialty area.

8 May 2007: Ministry releases reports on intervention rates for select group of elective procedures (Media release)
Work towards ensuring all New Zealanders get similar access to elective services has moved a step closer with information going to district health boards detailing their intervention rates for a group of defined procedures.
