Health Domain

www.moh.govt.nz/healthdomain

The Ministry of Health has worked with the Health and Disability Sector and InternetNZ to create a new second level internet domain .health.nz, for the exclusive use of the Sector. Names ending in .health.nz will be available to: DHBs; the clinics and surgeries of registered practitioners; ambulance services; government health agencies; and registration authorities.

What is a Health Domain Name?

The domain name.health.nz is the new Health domain name available exclusively to the New Zealand Health and Disability Sector.

Who can use the Health Domain Name?

Organisations whose principal purpose is to provide health and disability services through registered practitioners as defined by The Health Practitioners Competency Assurance Act 2003 are eligible.

Included organisations:

  • Clinics, surgeries and DHBs.
  • Ambulance services.
  • Registration Authorities for practitioners.
  • Government health and disability agencies.
Individual registered health practitioners who do not normally work through an organisation may apply for a .health.nz domain name.

The Health Domain Moderator retains the right to decline an individual application if it does not meet the moderation policy.

Who is not able to use the Health Domain Name?

The Health Practitioners Competency Assurance Act 2003 (The Act) is the guiding principle as to who is able to apply for and use .health.nz. As such the following exclusions apply.

  • A health professional whose profession is not endorsed by a Registered Authority and covered by The Act.
  • Health professionals who are not a member of a Registered Authority.
  • Professional associations.
  • Emergency services other than ambulance services.

Who is the Health Domain Moderator?

The Health Domain Moderator is an office of the Ministry of Health. The Health Domain Moderator can be contacted on healthdomain@moh.govt.nz or (04) 816 2851.

What names may be applied for?

Most names in the .health.nz domain will be the organisation, practice or trading name, or a reasonable abbreviation, of the organisation or individual registrant within the Sector.

Why use a Health Domain Name?

Using exclusive domain name within the Health and Disability Sector provides assurance that websites are genuine and emails are from bona-fide health practitioners.

A standard domain name helps support the Health and Disability Sector become an electronically connected health community.

How much will it cost?

The health domain name is available to registered health practitioners at no charge. Any associated costs such as internet connections, costs associated with changing contact information on business collateral such as letterhead and signage are a cost to the applicant.

How do I apply for a Health Domain Name?

Applications to use .health.nz will be managed by the Health Domain Moderator, email address: healthdomain@moh.govt.nz.

Applications will open in Sept/Oct 2009. Applications will be made through a web-based form. Some technical information will be needed to complete the application. The applicant may need to provide their HPI registration number and other contact/identification details.

What if my clinic doesn’t have a web site - can I get a Health Domain Name?

You can apply for a health domain name and only use it for email if you wish.

Can community pharmacies apply for a Health Domain Name?

A community or ‘retail’ pharmacy dispenses prescription medicines via registered pharmacists and is therefore eligible to apply for and use a .health.nz domain name to support the delivery of its health services.

However, like all other eligible health organisations, a pharmacy is not permitted to use the .health.nz domain name to sell or promote products unrelated to professional health services.

For example, if a pharmacy uses its .health.nz name for a website selling non-pharmaceutical products such as cosmetics, then it is likely to be in breach of the Health Domain Moderation Policy and have its health domain name withdrawn. Refer to section 3.4 of the Health Domain Moderation Policy for more details.

Under these circumstances a pharmacy's commercial website should remain on a .co.nz domain. This would not prevent them having and using a .health.nz domain name for other services such as email.
