Guidelines for Tuberculosis Control in New Zealand 2003Date of Publication: December 2002
ISBN: 0-478-25593-4
An enormous amount of literature on almost all aspects of TB control has been published since the second edition of Guidelines for Tuberculosis Control in New Zealand was produced by the Ministry of Health in 1996.
This third edition aims to provide a thorough review of the evidence, together with clear guidance from the Ministry of Health’s Tuberculosis Working Group on clinical, laboratory and public health aspects of TB control.
The editors feel that sound clinical and public health practice depends on a thorough understanding of the details of the TB literature, which is why the literature is evaluated in some detail.
However, a summary is provided at the head of each chapter so that readers have rapid access to the key points.
It must be emphasised that those who have responsibility for clinical or public health TB control and who wish to
practise with a full understanding of the topic must read in full the chapters that are relevant to their clinical practice.
These guidelines will need to be operationalised by local protocols to meet the needs and circumstances of
individual organisations.
The Ministry of Health’s Technical Guidelines for Tuberculin Testingand BCG Vaccination 1996 and A Guide to Section 16 of the Tuberculosis Act 1948 are still to be regarded as the primary sources of guidance on those particular topics.
The clinical chapters have been reviewed and endorsed by the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand. The Ministry is grateful for their assistance.
The Guidelines have not been published in hard copy. We hope that publication on the Ministry of Health’s website will facilitate more rapid updates of the Guidelines in future, permitting more timely modification to keep pace with rapidly evolving medical literature in the area.
