The New Zealand Health Monitor

A 10-year cycle of health-related surveys

Public Health Intelligence Occassional Bulletin No 13

Publication date: August 2002

The New Zealand Health Monitor is a coordinated 10 year cycle of population based health related surveys. The purpose of this strategic approach to health surveys is to improve the coverage, scope and timeliness of survey-based health information.

The monitor also goes beyond serial cross sectional prevalence surveys to include longitudinal data on survey participants, so providing a dynamic rather than only a static picture of health.

Surveys are designed to allow accumulation of sample across waves, permitting analysis at District Health Board level. Innovative dual frame sampling is used, so including the population living in residential care institutions as well as the househld population. Dual mode data collection - combining computer-assisted telephone with face to face interviews - is used to increase efficiency.

The monitor also includes a rapid response capability, based on computer-assisted telephone interviewing, to meet emergent information needs.
