The Mental Health Information Strategy - Key Directions summarises the key issues raised during consultation on the National Mental Health Information Strategy - discussion document.

In July 2005 the Ministry of Health released the National Mental Health Information Strategy.

For ease of analysis and understanding, the lessons learnt from the consultation process have been categorised under 10 general themes. This is due to the fact that most submissions were not organised around the 15 questions asked in the discussion document. Rather, they were focused on some or all of these 10 themes, as these are areas where the mental health stakeholders that made submissions either have relative expertise in and/or feel particularly strongly about.

These headings or general themes are:

1. Data
2. Workforce
3. Primary health care
4. Maori
5. Ethnicity
6. Infrastructure and system
7. Privacy and security
8. Access
9. NGOs
10. Intersectoral

Where submissions contained comments or queries about areas that fall outside of the ten themes listed above, these have been included in the Further Comments section.

This summary of submissions will be used to develop the structure and key objectives and activities in the National Mental Health Information Strategy, which is due for completion in 2005.

The completion of the National Mental Health Information Strategy will be followed by the development of an Implementation Plan. This plan will prioritise tasks, identify timeframes for their achievement, describe the operational steps required to realise these achievements, and define the responsibilities around the operational steps.
