Smokefree Law in New Zealand
Information for sports clubs
All
internal areas
of sports clubs must be permanently smokefree, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, if they are a workplace or a licensed premises, as defined by the Smoke-free Environments Act 1990. The legal responsibility for managing this rests with the club.
If your club is a workplace or licensed premises, you must take ‘
all reasonably practicable steps
’ to ensure that no person smokes inside at any time.
For the purposes of the Act, a reasonably practicable step is defined as what a reasonable and prudent person would do in similar circumstances. Failure to take such steps is a breach of the law.
For more information, contact a
Smokefree Officer at your local public health service
.

Several resources have been developed to assist sports clubs to understand their obligations under the changes to the legislation. Pamphlets can be downloaded from this site, while pamphlets, signs and stickers can be ordered from your
