Rural Health
Funding for rural premiums commenced in 2002, and is made up of the combined reasonable rosters and workforce retention funding, to support the retention and recruitment of the rural primary health care workforce.
Reasonable rosters funding is intended to improve rural on-call rosters, where for geographical reasons, doctors and nurses providing first level services are experiencing onerous on-call arrangements.
The workforce retention funding is a flexible resource to assist with retention and recruitment of all primary health professionals in rural communities. The funding may be applied to a range of strategies to create favourable working conditions.
The level of funding paid for workforce retention is based on the rural ranking scale.
