Suicide and the media: the reporting and portrayal of suicide in the media: a resource

This resource discusses the evidence showing a link between media reporting and portrayal of suicide and a subsequent increase in suicidal behaviour by vulnerable people. The resource urges caution in how suicide is reported and portrayed, and suggests some issues journalists and editors should consider to minimise the risk. It also provides some brief information about suicide and where to go for further information.

The Mindframe Media and Mental Health project (Australia)

This project has developed a resource kit (including the companion website) for use by media professionals to inform appropriate reporting of suicide and mental illness, to minimise harm and copycat behaviour, and reduce the stigma and discrimination experienced by people with mental illness. Resources are also available for stage and screen, the mental health and suicide prevention sectors, and police officers.
