Diabetes Surveillance

Population-based estimates and projections for New Zealand, 2001–2011

Public Health Intelligence Occasional Bulletin No. 46

Date of publication: September 2007

Summary

Understanding the descriptive epidemiology of type 2 diabetes is useful for planning health promotion and disease prevention interventions.

This report presents estimates for the incidence, prevalence and mortality of known (diagnosed) type 2 diabetes by age and sex, based on a multistate lifetable model. The input data is drawn from the 2002/03 New Zealand Health Survey and the Asia Pacific Cohort Studies Collaboration, among other sources. The epidemiological parameters are then projected out to 2011 under a variety of scenarios.

This work updates an earlier model built by the Ministry in 2002.
