Summary
The Guidelines for the Control of Multidrug-resistant Organisms in New Zealand are a resource for DHBs to develop own their local guidelines to control Multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs).
These Guidelines for the Control of Multidrug-resistant Organisms in New Zealand provide general advice on MDRO control but focus mainly on those MDROs that are currently considered most important in New Zealand in terms of emergence and risk of transmission. In particular, they focus on extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing organisms and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium and E. faecalis (VRE).
The Guidelines include antibiotic stewardship, modes of transmission and risk factors, administrative support for infection control, management of patients with MDROs in health care facilities, screening, management of staff, transfer of patients between institutions, additional measures in the event of an outbreak, management in the community, surveillance, microbiological methods, and treatment.
MRSA is not specifically included in these MDRO Guidelines as the Guidelines for the Control of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in New Zealand were extensively revised in 2002 (Ministry of Health 2002). These MDRO Guidelines are designed to complement the MRSA Guidelines and should be used in conjunction with them.
The guidelines were produced by representatives from the Antibiotic Resistance Advisory Group (ARAG) and invited experts, with members representing several DHBs around the country.
