Youth Health Services
School-based clinics
Community-based health centres
Young people access health services in a range of settings including school-based health clinics, youth-focused community-based health centres, traditional general practices and through mobile and out-reach clinics. There is strong evidence to show that young people have a preference for youth-specific health services, and that utilisation of health services increases when young people have access to appropriate services.
School-based clinics
A number of secondary schools are providing health services to students – models vary widely between schools. Some have ‘wellness centres’ which house health and social services aimed at improving student wellbeing, some have full-time school-based nurses, and others are supported by visiting health professionals including GPs and public health nurses. An example of a good school-based service is the
Healthy Community Schools
initiative delivered in the AIMHI group of schools.
Community-based health centres
There is a network of youth health services providing care to young people in the community. The services are often referred to as ‘one-stop-shops’ and provide a range of services to young people.
