Immunisation coverage for New Zealand children at 24 months of age is 80% for the 12 month period ending june 2009.
Immunisation coverage is measured at ‘milestone ages’. The milestone ages are 6 months, 12 months (1 year), 18 months, 24 months (2 years), 5 years and 12 years of age.
The National Immunisation Register (NIR) was rolled out in District Health Boards (DHBs) throughout 2005, so data is only available for the 6 month, 12 month, 18 month and in some district health boards, at the 24 month milestone ages.
Reporting changes were made in July 2009 to include children who have completed the immunisation schedule and were partially immunised overseas or had an alternative vaccine to the scheduled one or were immunised on a catch up programme. These children are now reported as being fully immunised. This means that the coverage rates are now more accurate and have increased by an additional 2% nationally.
The following table shows the immunisation coverage for children who turned the milestone age during a 3 month reporting period ending June 2009, and who have completed their age appropriate immunisation.
