Men's Health Literature Review
In December 2004 the Public Health Advisory Committee (PHAC) commissioned a literature review on men’s health. The aim of the review was to critically examine literature about men and their health status to inform considerations about men’s health in New Zealand. The review was carried out by Eileen McKinlay of the Wellington School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Otago University.

The Bowel (Colorectal) Cancer Screening Programme will be the first population screening programme that includes men. Men have much higher rates of bowel cancer than women. In 2004, the male registration rate for bowel cancer was 46.1 compared to the female rate of 38.9 per 100,000. Men also have a greater likelihood of dying from bowel cancer than women: male death rate 18.3 compared to the female death rate of 15.4 per 100,000.
