Citation: Ministry of Health. 2005. An Indication of New Zealanders’ Health 2005. Wellington: Ministry of Health.

Monitoring population health (and its determinants) is essential for identifying patterns and trends, developing appropriate programmes and policies, and measuring the outcomes of the programmes and policies that have been implemented.

Recognising this, the series An Indication of New Zealanders’ Health will be published annually, updated with the most recent data available.

The report presents demographic data for New Zealand, and socioeconomic and health outcome and risk/protective factor indicators for the 21 District Health Boards (DHBs) and New Zealand as a whole. The health outcomes presented address the 13 population health objectives identified in the New Zealand Health Strategy, and an additional section presents data on infectious disease.
