Citation: Ministry of Health. 2005. Guidelines on Using Cells from Established Human Embryonic Stem Cell Lines for Research: Discussion document. Wellington: Ministry of Health.

The Ministry of Health is inviting submissions on a discussion document that sets out proposed guidelines for research using stem cell lines from human embryos.

Although legislation and regulations relevant to human embryonic stem cell research already exist in New Zealand, there is no guidance specific to this research, and no such research takes place in this country. Guidelines are needed to clarify the issues that this research raises, to place appropriate restrictions on such research and to provide certainty for researchers, ethics committees and members of the public.

Once finalised, the guidelines will be used by researchers and by ethics committees that consider research using human embryonic stem cells.

All submissions are due by 5 pm Friday 3 March 2006. If there is sufficient demand, the Ministry will organise meetings to hear oral submissions on the draft guidelines.
