Summary

The Annual Report of the Director of Mental Health 2005 provides a record of the work the office. The report reflects the importance of transparency and accountability to the sector and the wider public. It is divided into three sections:

• how the office operates and the legislation it is guided by
• the work carried out by the office in 2005
• data on the use of the Mental Health (Compulsory Assessment and Treatment) Act 1992

An appendix provides historical background on compulsory treatment for mental disorder in New Zealand.

This is the first annual report by the Director of Mental Health. Future reports will build on this information and include trend data.
