Health and Independence Report 2001

Date of publication: November 2001

New Zealand spends in excess of $7 billion annually on health and disability support services. The range of services offered is immense. All New Zealanders at some time in their lives will come into contact with this system. Yet despite its size and complexity the health and disability sector has a very simple aim – to help improve the lives of all New Zealanders.

The Health and Independence Report gives some background on changes to the health and disability sector in New Zealand over the last decade. It brings together information from a variety of Ministry of Health publications on activity, workforce and finance, offering ease of reference.

This resource is intended for a wide range of users including health planners, health service providers, policy analysts, community groups – indeed, anyone with an interest in the health and disability sector. This publication is not intended to replace other publications. For more details on a specific subject, please refer to the source publications given in Appendix 3.

The overall aims and objectives for the health and disability sector are given in two accompanying publications: the New Zealand Health Strategy and the New Zealand Disability Strategy. This Health and Independence Report supports these two overarching documents.

It is intended to update this publication on a regular basis. To this end we welcome any feedback on its content, presentation or usefulness to:
