The Health Minister Annette King has released The Future Shape of Primary Health Care: A Discussion Paper.
A strong primary health care system is crucial to improving the health of New Zealanders. Primary health care is the first point of contact New Zealanders have with the health system. Every day 50,000 children and adults receive advice, treatment and care from primary health care practitioners.
This paper sets out ways that primary health care can improve the health of New Zealanders. These include showing people how to improve their health, preventing disease, supporting patient self-care and offering help for those with ongoing problems.
This paper also sets out ways to link a strong primary health system into the Government's overall health strategy. It aims to develop a greater population focus for those who provide primary health care, make sure everyone has easy access to good services, and ensure that the care given is up to same standard around the country.
The Minister is seeking responses from health care workers, communities and interested groups or individuals. The Ministry of Health will collect responses, consult on the strategy and report to the Minister in June. The closing date for submissions is 26 May 2000.
