Looking to the future

Pacific health and the inequalities in our communities‘ health status have ensured a place for Pacific peoples as a core part of the health and disability sector’s strategies and policies.

The newly launched Pacific Health and Disability Action Plan provides a firm foundation for us to continue to build on by identifying priority areas and strategies to achieve better outcomes.

Part of the development has been the investment in infrastructure – the establishment of the Pacific Health Branch at the Ministry of Health to complement the Chief Advisor’s position; the development of leadership capacity as evidenced by the appointment of Pacific directors to District Health Boards and the Health Research Council; and the capacity development for providers as evidenced by the $25 million dollars spent annually on Pacific by Pacific provided services.
  • We have achieved some of what we set out to do over the past 20 years.
  • We provide employment for Pacific peoples throughout the New Zealand health sector.
  • We provide a choice of health care providers for our communities and families.
  • We provide exciting career opportunities for our young people.
  • We have a well-established, sustainable Pacific provider sector delivering quality services.
  • We are developing an understanding of our health issues.

It is critical, as we continue our journey, to continue to learn from our past, to be unrelenting in our quest for better outcomes and to have high aspirations for what we may achieve.

In the future we will need to:

  • embrace technology advancements
  • develop our talent, workforce and leadership
  • continue to invest in our organisations
  • work closely with our communities
  • involve the people who use our services in meaningful ways
  • focus on excellence in service delivery and improving quality
  • measure and monitor the effectiveness of our services
  • continue to develop partnerships with mainstream organisations

Most of all we need to continue the extraordinary and wonderful work begun many years ago. We need to nurture the passion and commitment that sustain us.
"Let us embark on the next part of our journey - all heading in the same direction - all focused on the same destination,"
Audrey Aumua, Chief Advison, Pacific Health
