Regulation of Food in New Zealand


New Zealand Food Safety Authority (NZFSA) and Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) are responsible for food safety and food standards in New Zealand.

If you have questions about food safety (eg food additives, artificial sweeteners, contaminants in food, food premises registration, food labelling and food complaints) please contact the NZFSA.

New Zealand Food Safety Authority (NZFSA)


The New Zealand Food Safety Authority (NZFSA):
  • Protects and promotes public health and safety
  • Facilitates access to markets for New Zealand food and food related products.

The NZFSA operates the Foodsafe Partnership to provide food handling advice for consumers in the home. The Foodsafe website is www.foodsafe.org.nz. The Ministry of Health is a member of the Foodsafe Partnership.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ)


Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) is based on a partnership between the governments of Australia and New Zealand, and is responsible for developing, varying, and reviewing food standards for food available in Australia and New Zealand.
