Identification and Assessment of Factors Impacting Upon Council Decision-Making in Relation to Fluoridation of Public Drinking-Water Supplies

Produced under contract by ESR for the Ministry of Health

Date of publication: September 2002

This report contributes to the Ministry of Health's fluoridation policy by identifying and assessing the importance of factors impacting on local body decision-making on the fluoridation of public drinking water supplies.

The sanitary works subsidy scheme (SWSS) was announced on 23 May 2002 by Health Minister Annette King. As well as improved sewage treatment, the scheme also covers new works to add fluoride to community drinking-water supplies where communities chose to do so. The subsidies for water fluoridation covers 50 percent of the cost of the eligible capital works but expenditure on water fluoridation will not exceed more than 10 percent of the total annual appropriation for the SWSS of $15 million.

The report Identification and assessment of factors impacting upon council decision-making in relation to fluoridation of public drinking water supplies contributes to the Ministry's fluoridation policy by looking at and assessing the importance of factors that affect council decision-making in relation to fluoridation of public drinking water supplies.
