Mothers' rights

Breastfeeding discrimination remains widespread.

Information on the right to breastfeed is available on the Human Rights Commission website:

  • Your rights as a breastfeeding mother (English)
Your rights as a breastfeeding mother (Māori)
Your rights as a breastfeeding mother (Samoan)
Your rights as a breastfeeding mother (Tongan)
These pamphlets were developed after the Human Rights Commission wrote the 2005 report on 'The Right to Breastfeed' and made a submission that year to the Health Select Committee on a Woman's Right to Breastfeed.

  • View the report - The Right to Breastfeed - Background paper
The Commission has continued its work with a 2006 submission to the Law and Order Committee on the Corrections (Mothers with Babies) Amendment Bill.
