Breasts that are too full and if baby is unable to latch

If breasts feel too full (which commonly happens on days 3-5 after the birth) and a baby is unable to latch because of the firmness of the areola then express a little milk by hand to soften the areola to make it easier for mother and baby to get the breastfeed started.

View more information about hand expressing breastmilk on the Lactation Institute website.
