Previous breast surgery may affect breastfeeding

If a woman has had surgery on one or both breasts this may affect breastfeeding.

Discuss this with the Lead Maternity Carer (LMC) during pregnancy and consider a consultation with a lactation consultant to help prepare for breastfeeding.

Resources

There are helpful resources on the internet including a La Leche League International compilation of information - Breastfeeding after Breast Surgery.

A woman who has had breast reduction surgery may find the book by Diana West of great value. This book, “Defining your own success: Breastfeeding after breast reduction surgery” is considered to be essential reading for these situations. Local La Leche League libraries often have this book to loan so phone your local group to check this. View an article written by Diane West - Breastfeeding after Breast Surgery.

There are no known contraindications to breastfeeding after breast implants although establishing a breastmilk supply may take longer. View this useful article - Silicone Breast Implants and Breastfeeding.
