Exercise

Can I go for runs or to the gym when I am breastfeeding?

Breastfeeding women should maintain the level of physical activity enjoyed during pregnancy, but not increased beyond that level. They should enjoy regular, moderate physical activity, and aim to be physically active at moderate intensity for a total of 30 minutes on most if not all days of the week.

A good support bra is recommended (not an underwire bra, as this may put undue pressure on the breasts and could lead to blocked milk ducts), along with loose clothing and supportive footwear. Take frequent breaks, consume adequate food and drinks, and avoid exercising in extremely hot weather.

Mothers need to take time out for themselves. Going for a walk, a run or the gym provides exercise, fresh air and a time to relax. It is also important to get rest, and to eat well. Being tired or stressed can delay milk letdown. Most new mothers feel tired for the first few months so don’t overdo it in that period.
