Mental health

I'm feeling depressed, what can I do?

Mothers should talk with their partner, family/whanau, friends, well child health provider or health professionals about their feelings, especially if they are stressed or feeling depressed.

Being pregnant, giving birth and learning to look after a baby, including learning to breastfeed, is a big experience for the mind, body and spirit. Mothers will experience a whole range of feelings ranging from feeling joyful, powerful, capable; to feeling sad, overwhelmed and frustrated. It’s really important to talk about all these feelings with someone. Don’t be afraid or ashamed to ask for support and advice, that’s what the people who are around to support you are for.

If mothers find it difficult to ask for support and advice, or to talk to their health worker, then they should try and have someone with them when they visit, or write a list of questions. They can call 0800 611 116 for more information, or if their health worker is not available.
