Information sheet five:
Medications and breastfeeding

Many breastfeeding women are given advice to stop breastfeeding when they commence medication of various kinds. In the majority of cases women may continue to breastfeed.

Dr Thomas Hale, Clinical Pharmacologist and Paediatrician operates a forum for health professionals where he answers questions related to medications and breastfeeding with input form other practitioners.

Specific information about drug entry into breastmilk can be found on Dr Hale's website - Mechanisms of Drug Entry into Human Milk.

Information on the forum and other breastfeeding information can also be found on Dr Hale's website - Breastfeeding Pharmacology.
