Preparing: up until birth

This is the time for mothers to:

  • learn about the importance of breastfeeding - see Benefits of breastfeeding
  • build support networks with family/whānau, the community and health practitioners to support their breastfeeding - see Providing support for breastfeeding mothers
  • learn about how to breastfeed and build their confidence to breastfeed -see How to breastfeed
  • committing to breastfeed before their baby’s birth (commit to in the birth plan) - see Getting ready.

Why prepare for breastfeeding?

  • It’s the best start for a baby - see also Benefits of breastfeeding.
  • Knowing what to expect will make breastfeeding less daunting, and more likely to be successful - see also Getting ready.
  • Having people organised to help out will mean mothers can concentrate on getting breastfeeding established.
