The Baby Friendly Initiative

New Zealand has been very active in working towards the development of mother and baby friendly and family/ whānau focused care within our maternity facilities. The majority of our New Zealand maternity hospitals are now designated ‘Baby Friendly’ which means they are committed to helping mothers start out well with breastfeeding and have passed an accreditation process.

Baby Friendly maternity facilities support breastfeeding mothers by creating and implementing supportive policies and practices.

View more information about the Baby Friendly Hospital initiative (BFHI) on the New Zealand Breastfeeding Authority (NSBA) website - The Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative and read about what the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding have to do with your post-birth care.

Women who are birthing in a BFHI designated maternity facility can ask to see either the full or the abridged breastfeeding policy to check out what help and support they can expect to receive during their time in that facility.

For more information and interesting articles for parents you can visit the Baby Friendly UK website where you can download helpful leaflets.
