Midwifery First Year of Practice (MFYP) Programme

The MFYP programme is for first year midwives and provides a mix of mentoring and education to support graduate midwives in their first year in the workplace.

Evaluation report

The MFYP programme was evaluated in its pilot years (2007 and 2008) and the Executive Summary of the Evaluation Report can be found in Word and PDF below:

  • Midwifery First Year of Practice Pilot Programme Evaluation, Final Report July 2008 - Executive Summary (Word, 110 KB)
  • Midwifery First Year of Practice Pilot Programme Evaluation, Final Report July 2008 - Executive Summary (PDF, 79 KB)

Consultation on the Interim Specification

The Clinical Training Agency (CTA) reviewed the pilot training specifications for the Midwifery First Year of Practice training programme at the end of 2008 and the pilot specifications were superseded by one interim specification. The development of the interim specification took into account the evaluation findings of the pilot year and the views of the midwifery Expert Advisory Group.

  • View the interim MFYP training specification.
The CTA now invite those who have an interest in midwifery first year of practice training to provide us with your views on the interim specification. Once all responses have been collated and reviewed by the CTA and the Expert Advisory Group, a final specification will be approved and posted on the Ministry website.Submissions close on 15 May 2009.

Midwifery Complex Care Clinical training programme

In 2009 Minsitry of Health funding is available for this postgraduate training for a limited number of experienced midwives working in DHB secondary and tertiary settings. Its aim is to provide midwives with the academic education and clinical training they require in order to develop their clinical skills and experience in caring for women and babies with complex care needs. In 2009 the education providers are the Auckland University of Technology; the Victoria University and the Otago Polytechnic. Midwives who undertake this training will complete academic papers in conjunction with a clinical training programme.
