Breast milk survey

New Zealand’s Breast Milk Study - Investigation of Breast Milk for Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs)

Seventh quarterly progress report (1 April 2008 - 30 June 2008)

General progress
The study nurses continued to recruit mothers by attending antenatal classes; attending breast feeding classes; re-contacting midwives and other Lead Maternity Carers; and placing news articles in local news papers. Due to the work-load of midwives and the strict inclusion criteria of the study, the recruitment continues to be slow.

First visit mothers
Twenty-five mothers have had the first visit by the research nurse. During this first visit, the use of the collection bottles was explained. An additional 6 future mothers have consented to participate.

Second visit mothers
The following numbers of second visits have been completed:

Wellington12 completed
Wairarapa3 completed
Christchurch 4 completed
North Canterbury4 completed

In total twenty-three mothers have completed breast milk collection during the second visits of the research nurses.
