Breast milk survey

New Zealand’s Breast Milk Study - Investigation of Breast Milk for Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs)

Eighth quarterly progress report (1 July 2008 - 31 September 2008)

General progress
The study nurses continued to recruit mothers through attending antenatal and breast feeding classes; re-contacting midwives and other Lead Maternity Carers; and placing news articles in local news papers. Due to the work-load of midwifes and the strict inclusion criteria of the study, the recruitment continues to be slow.

First visit mothers
Thirty-one mothers have had their first visit by the research nurse. During this first visit, the use of the collection bottles was explained. An additional 2 future mothers have consented to participate.

Second visit mothers
The following number of second visits has been completed:

Wellington 15 completed
Wairarapa 4 completed
Christchurch 5 completed
North Canterbury4 completed

In total twenty-eight mothers have completed breast milk collection during the second visits of the research nurses.
