Emergency departments (EDs) are an important component of New Zealand’s health care system, treating people who have a serious illness or injury that requires urgent attention. There are close to 1 million ED attendances in New Zealand every year.

Shorter stays in Emergency departments logo.On 1 July 2009 a new Health Target focused on emergency departments came into effect. The target is called ‘Shorter Stays in Emergency Departments’ and is defined as ‘95 percent of patients will be admitted, discharged or transferred from an Emergency Department within six hours’. This target is one of six national Health Targets for 2009/10.

This website provides information about Emergency Departments, the Shorter Stays in ED Health Target, and the Ministry of Health’s Shorter Stays in ED Work Programme. Also on this website are a range of Tools and Resources to assist efforts to achieve the Shorter Stays in ED Health Target and improve the quality of acute (urgent) services.
