What is the target?

The percentage of the health budget spent on the Ministry of Health is reduced to 1.65 percent of the total Vote Health operating budget by the end of 2009/10. The current spend (2006/07) represents 1.85 percent of the total Vote Health operating budget.

What needs to be done to ensure we do meet this target?

Across Ministry programmes will ensure whole-of-organisation resources are applied appropriately to the Government’s priorities. A review of organisation capability will ensure that Ministry people and resources are consistent with the delivery expectations under the Statement of Intent. Ongoing quality management initiatives will ensure the efficient and effective management of public resources applied to the Ministry as an organisation.

How will this be measured?

The proportion of the health budget appropriate for the running of the Ministry will be reported quarterly as part of the Health Targets public reporting, excluding resources that are applied to sector and/or national health services.

Who is the Ministry of Health champion of this target?

Stephen McKernan, Director-General of Health
