Health of Older People in New Zealand

Community Care

Community care is the services that support older people to live in their homes. Services that give older people the ability to make choices in later life about where to live, and to receive the support to do so. Such services enable older people to receive care and support in the community for longer, and can prevent or delay entry into residential care.

The Ministry of Health promotes the development of community care while working to improve the health outcomes for older people. An important aspect of this is integrated services provision and a greater emphasis on community-based services to support older people in their homes. This shift is in line with the Health of Older People Strategy and the Positive Ageing Strategy.
