The Ministry of Health reviewed the use of human tissue for therapeutic and non-therapeutic purposes in 2004. As a result the Human Tissue Bill was introduced in November 2006. The Human Tissue Act 2008 was passed on 8 April 2008 and received royal assent on 18 April 2008. The Act came into force on 1 November 2008, on this date it repealed and replaced the Human Tissue Act 1964.
