Mental health campaigns win awards (10 October)
Two Ministry of Health campaigns to reduce discrimination and increase support for people with experience of mental illness won gold in last night’s advertising EFFIE awards.

New Guidelines on Identifying Mental Health Problems and Managing Depression (17 July)
The Ministry of Health and the New Zealand Guidelines Group have launched a new mental health guideline aimed at improving the assessment of common mental disorders and the management of depression in primary care.

Mental Health Services Target: Six out of 10 mentally ill people have crisis prevention plans (10 April)
Bobby (name changed to protect privacy) has bipolar affective disorder but has developed a plan to cope with alternating periods of mania and depression.

New plan to change behaviour towards mental illness (www.beehive.govt.nz, 15 November)
Associate Health Minister Steve Chadwick has launched a new six-year plan to reduce discrimination against people with mental illness.

The ‘Like Minds, Like Mine National Plan 2007 – 2013: Programme to counter stigma and discrimination associated with mental illness’ outlines a number of ways to improve the way people understand and deal with mental illness.

Increase in services for forensic mental health patients (11 April)
The Ministry of Health notes the increase in forensic mental health services provision across the country, as shown in the Census of Forensic Mental Health Services, carried out in 2005.
