Workforce

Workforce development is a priority for the Ministry of Health. The Mental Health Group funds a national infrastructure for workforce development in the mental health and addictions sector.

Workforce development looks at the whole workforce system – education and training, recruitment and retention, leadership and management, organisational culture. Simply put, it is about ensuring that the right people are in the right place doing the right thing at the right time – for the benefit of people who need to access services.

We have a four year workforce plan which is the building block for a longer term plan for workforce development – realising it takes some time to influence change, to train and develop the workforce, as well as being responsive to new ways of delivering services.

Tauawhitia te Wero is a plan for the development of the mental health and addictions workforce over the next four years. It supports the leading challenge for 'Workforce and Culture for Recovery' in Te Tahuhu - Implementing Mental Health.
