This section contains information on the Ministry of Heath’s annual Seasonal Influenza Immunisation Programme and information on pandemic influenza H1N1 2009 (swine flu).

Seasonal vaccine now protects against swine flu
This year’s seasonal influenza vaccine will protect you against Pandemic Influenza H1N1 2009 (swine flu) as well as two other common influenza strains.

The vaccine is free for people who are at high-risk of developing complications from influenza.

The Ministry of Health is strongly encouraging everyone to get the seasonal influenza vaccine and to do it every year.

This is usually around three to four days after symptoms start, but coughing may last up to two or three weeks.

  • Covering coughs and sneezes
  • Regularly washing your hands and drying them thoroughly
  • Avoiding contact with sick people and reducing time spent in crowded settings.

Get medical advice if you have a serious condition including respiratory disease, heart disease, liver disease, blood disorders and neurological conditions or have immunosuppression (including immunosuppression caused by medications or by HIV).
