Nurse Practitioner Employment and Development Working Party
Newsletter No 3, 18 September 2006

The NPE+D Working Party presented its Report on barriers to Nurse Practitioner employment to the Minister of Health on 5 May 2006. The recommendations contained in the Working Party’s Report were far-reaching and comprehensive, emphasising that there is no doubt that the Nurse Practitioner has a key role to play in improving health status, reducing inequalities, reducing the national burden of chronic disease and in supporting the independent living of people with disabilities.

As a response to the Report, the Ministry of Health went through an internal and external consultation process that led to its Health Report on the Working Party’s Report being presented to the Minister in early September. The Ministry’s Health Report recommended that the key strategy to advance the uptake of the role should be the implementation of a Nurse Practitioner Employment Facilitation Programme, with a DHB focus. The Ministry’s view is that the programme should be designed so that it reflects the intent of the NZ Primary Health Care strategy and the NZ Disability Strategy.

The Minister has responded to the Health Report, giving his support to the Nurse Practitioner Facilitation Programme. The first steps towards planning the implementation will be taken in the near future.

Regular updates on the implementation of the programme will be posted on this website which has been developed to assist people interested in knowing more about the role of the Nurse Practitioner. This site provides case studies on how nurse practitioners work; links to the most important documents for those wanting to know more about either employing or becoming a nurse practitioner and includes other articles of interest. Your feedback on the website is welcome.

The Working Party’s key role from now on will be one of ensuring that there is meaningful debate on funding issues relating to post-graduate training and to the options for funding Nurse Practitioner roles. Discussion documents are being prepared on these issues now and the responses will help to frame the Facilitation Programme. The Working Party will also oversee work which is in progress on the registration process for Nurse Practitioners.
