Pacific Health

Pacific Health Work Programmes

There are now Pacific Health work programmes in two different directorates of the Ministry, both focused on improving health outcomes for Pacific peoples. These are:
  • A Pacific Innovations and Capability work programme in the Sector Capability and Innovation Directorate

  • Pacific Policy and Strategy development in the Health and Disability Systems Strategy Directorate.

These specific Pacific Health work programmes recognise the need to improve Pacific peoples’ health outcomes, and reduce inequalities experienced by Pacific peoples in accessing health and disability services. The work is mandated by the Government's health and disability strategies, the Minister's priorities, and health targets.

The Chief Advisor Pacific Health provides leadership and guidance both to the Pacific health sector and across the Ministry of Health. The Chief Advisor Pacific Health is located in the Sector Capability and Innovation Directorate and leads the Pacific Innovations and Capability building work.

The Pacific Health groups continue to work collaboratively together to progress several joint projects.

Pacific Innovation and Capability

Building Pacific innovations and Capability involves working with the Pacific health sector to foster innovation and best practice and support capability development. This includes facilitating referral and links to Pacific health expertise across the health sector. Consulting and networking with Pacific communities, government agencies and advisory bodies, and Pacific provider development are also key responsibilities.

Pacific Policy and Strategy

Pacific Policy and Strategy development aims to provide strategic and whole-of-system perspectives and advice on the development of the health and disability system. The Team is progressively focusing more on strategic policy issues across the health system, such as improving the information/evidence base and monitoring DHB performance, to ensure the long-term wellbeing of Pacific peoples. Ensuring Pacific perspectives and health needs are reflected in other Ministry policy activity is a key goal.
