A National Professional Development Framework for Palliative Care Nursing in Aotearoa New Zealand was developed as part of the implementation of the New Zealand Palliative Care Strategy and the Cancer Control Strategy Action Plan 2005–2010.

This document provides a framework for the professional development of nurses working in palliative care including:

  • an overview of the context of nursing in palliative care
  • a model for the professional development of nurses in palliative care
  • pathways for the development of nursing competence in palliative care nursing
  • core palliative care competencies for all registered nurses
  • specialty palliative care competencies for registered nurses.
