Problem Gambling in New Zealand

Services - National Coordination

Service description

The Ministry of Health funds a National Coordination Service (NCS) to support intervention and public health service providers. The coordination service works closely with and under the guidance of the Ministry and workforce development providers to:

  • support the provision of dedicated Māori, dedicated Pacific and general problem gambling services
  • maintain an awareness of any new emergent issues or trends that may impact on the problem gambling sector
  • improve communication and co-ordination among agencies involved in preventing and minimising gambling-related harm
  • encourage informed public debate and support for initiatives to prevent and minimise gambling harm
  • align national, regional and local activities to ensure they complement each other and support the Ministry’s Strategic Plan
  • facilitate collaboration among service providers involved in preventing and minimising gambling-related harm, to minimise provider isolation and achieve nationally consistent service delivery
  • recognise the needs of the providers, and work with the Ministry to develop a programme for responding to these needs, to build and improve capacity across the sector
  • facilitate and support specified workforce development activities in conjunction with the Ministry and problem gambling workforce development provider/s
  • establish strong communication links with the Ministry, and other stakeholders within the problem gambling sector.
