Summary of publication
The National Diabetes Retinal Screening Grading System and Referral Guidelines (2006) were developed in 2006 and published in January 2007, after an extensive review of diabetic retinopathy literature and the retinopathy grading systems used in New Zealand and overseas.
The Guidelines support the substantial evidence on the benefits of eye screening as part of retinopathy prevention, with diabetic retinopathy a significant complication of diabetes. Screening for retinopathy has been shown to prevent avoidable loss of vision as well as being cost-effective. Retinal screening has also been identified as a priority in the Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease Quality Improvement Plan (2008).
Summary of resources
The National Diabetes Retinopathy Screening Advisory Group, in conjunction with the Ministry, has developed resources to support the Guidelines. These are a CD and a laminated quick-reference sheet, in addition to printing the Guidelines in hard copy.
These resources will support the training and work of photo-screeners, ophthalmologists and optometrists and increase awareness of retinal screening services.
