What is the Mental Health Service Payment?
The Mental Health Service Payment is a fee that allows a General Practitioner to submit a claim for a fee if they have been called upon to assess someone needing treatment under the terms of Act.

How much can I Claim?
For each certificate, notice or statement in writing completed in respect of an examination made between the hours of 6.00pm on any day and 8.00am on the following day, or between the hours of 6.00pm on the Friday and 8.00am on the following Monday, or on a Public Holiday is $236.25.

For every other certificate, notice or statement in writing is $185.63.

In addition to the fee payable, for each completed kilometre necessarily travelled from surgery to residence or the purpose of examining a person preparatory to completing a certificate, notice or statement in writing, and return, a medical travel fee of $1.69 per kilometre is claimable.

How do I Claim?
By completing a Mental Health Compulsory Assessment & Treatment Act Claim form. The following is mandatory information which must be provided for your Claim Form to be accepted:
  • Claimants (GP’s) Payee Number
  • Claimants (GP’s) Name
  • Claimants Address
  • Name of Patient Examined
  • Date of Service
  • Time of Service
  • Mileage (number of km’s)
  • Examination Fee
  • Mileage Fee
  • Total Claimed
  • Signature of Claimant and date
  • Signature of Officer Authorised by Director Area Mental Health Services and date.
Who is an Officer Authorised by Director Area Mental Health Services?
A DAMHS is a person who is designated by the Director-General of Health by a notice published in the New Zealand Gazette (section 92). The DAMHS is usually nominated by Hospital and Health Services (HHSs) and formally appointed by the Director-General of Health. The DAMHS should not be the same person who is the HHS service manager or clinical director.

Ring your District Health Board who will give you your designated Officer Authorised by Director Area Mental Health Services for your area.

Where can I get a Mental Health Claim Form?
Ring Sector Services’s Contact Centre on: 0800 458 448 Monday – Friday 8:00am – 5:00pm, except Wednesdays between 9:30am and 5:00pm and ask to speak with the Minor Benefits Administrator.
