Summary

The consultation document Towards a New Zealand Medicines Strategy was released in December 2006. It described how the medicines system in New Zealand currently works, identified areas where the current system can be improved, and proposed a new strategic direction. In doing so it focused on three key objectives, as being crucial for obtaining the greatest benefit from the use of medicines:

the quality, safety and efficacy of available medicines
access to medicines that New Zealanders can afford, regardless of an individual’s ability to pay
the optimal use of medicines.

This document summarises the feedback the Ministry of Health received on Towards a New Zealand Medicines Strategy and subsequent consultation meetings. The consultation process has provided information that will feed into the process of advising the Government on the development of a medicines strategy.
