Suicide is the second leading cause of death in the 15-24 year age group, following motor vehicle crashes.

Latest New Zealand youth suicide figures are similar to 1996, and are down from 1995. However, overall the youth suicide rate has doubled since 1985.

Suicide prevention requires a range of interventions across a number of settings and the co-operation of Government, service providers, communities and families. These are outlined in the New Zealand Youth Suicide Prevention Strategy.
