An Indication of New Zealanders’ Health

Public Health Intelligence – Occasional Report No 1

Published July 2002

Monitoring the state of the public health of a country is an integral component of a health system. Public Health Intelligence (PHI) carries out the Ministry of Health’s statutory responsibility in this area, through four interconnected workstreams: surveys, health geoinformatics, modelling and forecasting and surveillance.

The report ‘An Indicator of New Zealander’s Health’ is an essential element in the overall monitoring of health in NZ. Data have been extracted from a variety of national and international sources and brought together in one easily accessible report. The indicators were selected in response to a variety of requests for such information and developed after consultation within the Public Health Directorate.

The report presents information about each indicator under four headings:
  • time trends, ethnic patterns
  • small area deprivation
  • geographic distribution, and
  • international comparison.

No attempt has been made to interpret any patterns as the sole purpose is to provide the information for policy and decision makers.
